Course overview
Explore the intricate relationship between metabolic and endocrine disorders and their effects on bone health. Participants will learn about a range of conditions such as osteoporosis, rickets, parathyroid and thyroid disorders, and how these affect bone density, structure, and function.
Key highlights
Designed for healthcare professionals and students, this course aims to provide a detailed understanding of the mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for managing bone diseases linked to metabolic and hormonal imbalances.
What you will learn:
- Osteoporosis, Rickets, and Osteomalacia: Gain a thorough understanding of these bone metabolic diseases, including the hormonal and nutritional factors that contribute to weakened bones and abnormal bone mineralisation.
- Parathyroid Disorders & Renal Osteodystrophy: Learn how parathyroid hormone dysregulation and chronic kidney disease result in imbalances in calcium and phosphate, leading to bone resorption and altered bone metabolism.
- Pituitary and Thyroid Disorders: Explore how excessive or insufficient production of thyroid and pituitary hormones disrupts bone turnover, leading to conditions such as hyperthyroidism-related bone loss and acromegaly-related overgrowth.
- Paget Disease of Bone: Understand the abnormal bone remodelling in Paget disease, which causes bone to become misshapen and structurally weak due to accelerated turnover.
- Bone Health in Diabetes Mellitus: Discover how diabetes mellitus affects bone metabolism and increases the risk of fractures due to chronic hyperglycaemia and other metabolic disturbances.
- Pregnancy and Adrenal Disorders: Study the metabolic changes during pregnancy and adrenal dysfunctions that influence bone density, particularly in the context of hormonal shifts and nutrient demands on the body.
The session will be conducted by Dr Dennis K. Bielecki, MD, Diagnostic Radiologist with a specialist in Musculoskeletal radiology. With over 30 years of experience in bone and joint radiology, Dr. Bielecki is a Senior Musculoskeletal (MSK) Specialist Radiologist at King’s College Hospital, one of the UK’s leading academic and research hospitals. He is also a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Imaging Sciences at King’s College London, where he teaches and trains the future generation of radiologists, medical students, and radiographers. Dr. Bielecki trained in diagnostic imaging in the United States.
