World Cancer Day 2022

World Cancer Day will be held on Friday 4th February 2022. Radiologists remain at the forefront in diagnosing cancer and we pledge to continue to do our bit in providing a range of seminars, supporting radiologists in the diagnosis and treatment of Cancer to support patient outcomes.

Patient care is always at the heart of our community, and education, and the sharing of expertise internationally, continues to be the most integral way our Radiology community can look to extend their role in making a difference to patient outcomes.

Having already kicked off the year with our MSK Imaging course, focusing on a range of oncology imaging reviewing sarcoma best practice imaging, we’ve already supported MSK radiologists in refreshing their expertise in identifying malignant spinal tumours and improving their approach to Spinal Biopsy. Led by experts including Dr Asif Saifuddin, of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and Dr Imran Khan, Head of the Leicester Sarcoma Service, they have shared their expertise which is accessible via on-demand for Radiologists to watch when time is available.

Covering a range of Oncology Imaging, we also have forthcoming courses, e.g. our Virtual MRI course, which will feature presentations on Prostate Cancer Imaging on the Abdominal day of our Imaging course (Weds 16th March). On our Breast Imaging day (Thurs 17th March) we'll hear from Dr Aisling Butler on Secondary Breast Cancer and ask 'Breast Screening; Are we doing the right thing? An important session led by Dr Kate Gower Thomas to consider if the medical community are doing all they can to diagnose and treat cancer as quickly as possible.

Our International Courses then include insight from Harvard and University of Toronto's professors across a range of Abdominal and Interventional cases relating to malignancy. Our Body Imaging and Interventional Course (16-19 May) will be an opportunity for Radiologists across the world to share their expertise.

Whilst radiologists continue to be at the forefront, the significance of the gap in expertise available continues to be a problem for the UK, and across the international community. This year's campaign focus is to #CloseTheCareGap but we also hope Government's will look to tackle the critical shortage of Radiologists and Radiographers, to #closetheskillsgap and give cancer patients a quicker and faster diagnosis and treatment plan, to increase survival and comfort.
